Big N5 of the Week - Mario! Monsters! Coins! Oh My!

Sir EggBeatr8 here to bring you another installment of the Big N5! The Olympics is the main going on, but let's see what's stirring up in the Nintendo universe!

5. Month of Mario! Virtual Console Mario games on sale for a limited time!
To celebrate the release of New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo is offering VC Mario titles for a bargain price for limited times only! The titles and dates are as followed:
July 26 - Aug. 1 - Super Mario Bros. - $3.99
Aug. 2 - Aug. 8 - Super Mario Land - $2.99
Aug. 9 - Aug. 15 - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - $2.99
Aug. 16 - Aug. 22 - Mario's Picross - $2.99
Be sure to pick them up!

4. Rumor: Both Monster Hunters for 3DS may be coming to America.
After an iffy forecast of speculation, a new light has finally formed about whether Monster Hunter Tri 3G and Monster Hunter 4 will be coming to the US - but it's a rumor. Someone with supposed inside info on the Capcom titles has stated the claim, but only time will tell if either title will be launched overseas. And where is that Professor Layton and Ace Attorney American release people are waiting for in all of this? Be sure to check in.

3. Indie RPG "Two Brothers" possible for Wii U/3DS eShop?
"Two Brothers" is an indie action/adventure/role playing/nostalgia game being developed by AckkStudios, made into the style and texture of a Game Boy game. In an interview with the developer Brian Allanson this is what he had to say about the possibility of the games coming to the eShop: "I would never rule out the possibilities of porting the game to a Nintendo console, but I think I would rather create another game designed for those systems strengths." While it doesn't seem likely for this game to hit the eShop any time soon, another secret project entitled "Atlas" was confirmed for 2013. Brain did not say if it was a 3DS title, but he did hint at "3D" in the interview. You never know!

2. Ike confirmed as Fire Emblem: Awakneing DLC.
Do you like Ike? Of course you do! Well you Fire Emblem fans will be glad to know that Ike will be appearing in the next Fire Emlem as priced DLC! Your enemies will tremble in fear of the mighty swing of your bl- wait, why is he so skinny?

1. Kirby 20th anniversary listed as $39.99 on Gamestop.
Is this the official or the marked down price of Kirby's Anniversary Collection? If it's the latter, it would be a good time to snag this goodie!

Sorry to any readers that may be reading this, as I've been busy yesterday and could not for the life of me finish this on time, but the blog will continue as scheduled on Sunday. Hopefully.

Have a great week everyone!

The Big N5 of the Week - I'm a-ridin' on a-pony!

Hello and welcome to another rendition of The Big N5!

5. HMV apologizes for the misleading 3DS XL ad.
HMV has something to say about last week's embarrassing 3DS XL ad with a photoshopped second analog stick: "It's apparent this was just one particular store being a little over-enthusiastic - and the poster has been removed. If it's caused anyone any issues then we're sorry, but I'd say it doesn't take much to work out this doesn't represent the company's retail offer for this release." Thanks for being a good sport, HMV. Now don't go photoshopping a second screen on the Wii U control pad!

4. New Super Mario Bros. 2/Demon Training heading to Japan's 3DS eShop.
Starting July 28, two downloadable games will be heading to the Japanese 3DS eShop: New Super Mario Bros. 2 for 4,800 Yen ($61) and Demon Training for 3,800 Yen ($48). Don't be alarmed by the high prices, since the American dollar is weak in Japan, and the American downloadable versions will be the same price as the physical copies. NSMB2 will be released in the U.S. on August 19th. Demon Training's release is TBA.

3. Nintendo claims Wii U will be important for the world.
In a Gamasutra interview Iwata expresses how it's not all about being first in the console spotlight: "Being first in the next generation race is not important at all," he tells Gamasutra. "One of the reasons we believe this is the time for Nintendo to launch the Wii U is it's going to be important for the world." Later in the interview he discusses about the 3DS hardware sales, and the potential for the Wii to still produce more games, but didn't go into any specifics about the Wii U's price tag. He closes with this statement about graphics power: "We have not changed our strategy. In other words, we just do not care what kind of 'more beef' console Microsoft and Sony might produce in 2013. Our focus is on how we can make our new console different than [others]." Amen. Hopefully all three future systems can thrive in harmony.

2. My Little Epona T-shirt sells out on TeeFury.com.
Bronies and Zelda fans alike got a nice treat this week when the 'My Little Epona' T-Shirt was up for sale on TeeFury.com on Friday. Created by Julia "JellySnail" Whittles this adorable Zelda/MLP fancry to both fan services. It is sadly not available any more.

1. 30 Obscure facts about Mario.
You think you know Mario games? Well did you know that Goombas are called Kuribos in Japan? That Kamek was going to be a playable character in Mario Kart 64? Here's 28 more facts you probably didn't about your favorite plumber!

Thanks for reading and have a great week!

E3 2012 Predictions.

Another year, another E3 and a Nintendo Conference. Some say Nintendo’s last outing was lacking, and I can somewhat agree on that. All they really showed was…well, not much; it was mostly hush-hush projects, announcements for the 3DS we already knew about, and the new home console system, the Wii-U, and didn’t show any games for it. But forget about that, because E3 is just a few weeks away, and if E3 2011 was anything at all it was hype fuel for this year’s E3. With all the new titles being shown I can assure you it will not be a disappointing year. And what exciting titles could we expect this year? Here’s my honest opinions on the line-up (from most to least likely; not including games already announced for this E3):

Most definitely likely – A New Zelda.

It’s going to happen. No doubts here. Last Zelda console game was last year’s Skyward Swords on the Wii, and the last time the series appeared on a portable console was Spirit Tracks on the DS in 2009. If anything if it isn’t a new Four Swords utilizing the new Wii-U controller (seriously Nintendo, get on it) it will be on the 3DS. It’s already been rumored to boot. And if it’s true, hopefully it’s a full scale game like OoT and not another point-and-move-stylus-Zelda. Please Nintendo, utilize your technology for the greater good!

Extremely likely – WarioWare Wii-U/3DS.

To me this seems likely due to the fact that there’s a WarioWare game released on every Nintendo console, usually as a launch title. With every leap in innovation comes a new and crazy Micro-Game compilation, and I’d love to see what they come up with using the Wii-U controller. And let’s face it, if this game isn’t announced or even hinted at this year’s convention then Nintendo never came. Seriously, this is a series that is Nintendo, like every Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Wii Fit title ever made that defined this company. Saying this won’t be at the show would be like saying Wario hates money.

Probably – The next Mario game.

I have to hand it to Miyamoto. I wish I had such will to keep a game series afloat for so long and not let it go stale. Whatever crazy idea he comes up for the next console Mario game I can’t even fathom, so it’s better for me to just shut up and let imagination take it’s course. (Anyone hoping for Mario sunshine 2?)

----

Possibly, if not later – Mario Kart Wii-U.

Yes, yes, we already got Mario Kart 3D last year, but Nintendo thinks ahead on these things. I wouldn’t doubt they’re cooking up Mario Kart Wii-U as we speak (Hopefully with some more Super Circuit tracks). Mario Kart is never too far behind after a console’s launch after all. Hard to say if we’ll actually see it at E3, but it’s not too hard to imagine that there will be a Mario Kart for the Wii-U in the future.

There’s a good chance – Metroid Prime 4 (or a 2-D platformer).

After the mixed reviews of Metroid: Other M with it’s talking Samus and frequent cut scenes involving an unnatural amount of dialogue after dialogue for an action game, it would be a blessing for the series to go back into the Prime saga of first-person exploration and space pirate blasting. Even better for the series is go back to it’s 2-D platforming roots, but Metroid Dread just doesn’t seem to want to be made any time soon (what is so wrong with our money, Nintendo?). And what about that Star Fox and Metroid crossover? If that game is actually legit I’m going to eat my shorts through a straw. No joking.

Maybe – Return of Yoshi’s Island.

Where have you gone to, Yoshi? It’s about time for you to set on another adventure – maybe this time with multi-player mode a la’ NSMB Wii on the Wii-U. Come on, who doesn’t want to eat one another and then poop each other out in eggs? …Okay, I apologize for that frightening image if you weren’t thinking of Yoshi at the time, so think instead of the fun you’ll have jumping on each other’s heads; scrambling on one another to get your baby character back when you get hit. Ah…. A 3-D game wouldn’t be bad either, but we just want Yoshi back!

----

Hang on to your lucky clovers – Xenoblade 2.

As an avid CRAZY fan of Xenoblade I really, really, really, really, REALLY hope this one comes a reality. Though on the other hand I know that I’ll be very disappointed this year if it isn’t announced, and I know Monolithe Soft is working on Project X Zone at the moment so there’s a slim chance of it appearing, but I’m still clasping my four-leafer with my COLD. SHAKING. FANBOY. HANDS. IN. PRAYER for this game. Did I mention how much I love Xenoblade? Why are you leaving?

Not likely – Smash Bros. 4.

I have more hope of Xenoblade 2 being shown than I do with a teaser for SSB4, and that’s kind of strange until you think about. Hal Laboratory said themselves that they won’t start production on SSB4 until Kid Icarus: Uprising is complete, and that game just came out a month ago. If they had any time to work on the project, it’s most likely not even past the concept stage. Sad, I know, but don’t worry, we’ll definitely get a teaser in E3 2013 and then we’ll only have to wait 3 more years after that for the game to actually be released. …Okay, now I’m depressed.

Yeah, just forget about it – F-Zero.

No. Bad fanboy. Put that chair door. Put it down NOW. Good fanboy. Here’s a Scooby snack and a Kleenix tissue for your troubles. Sorry I had to write that, but let’s face it guys, the odds of this game being shown at the convention is the same as a new Elite Beat Agents, Chibi-Robo, and Mother 4 being announced this year – also, for that Mother 4 game being announced for America. I know, it SUCKS. But I moved on from EBA, and you should move on too…or better yet, don’t take a grain of salt out of my words. Yeah, I’m writing with honesty, but I can never fully predict what E3 this year has in store. For all I know, Smash Bros. 4 could be shown in all it’s Nerdgasm-inducing glory, my Xenoblade 2 dreams could come true, Star Fox would make a comeback with Metroid, and you’ll get two F-Zero games! …Or maybe not that last part- Ohhhhh, there’s no need to get hasty now…um…nice fanboy?

Also, I apologize for the lack of Kirby. I only picked three games for each category of likelihood, so I had no room left.

P.S. See you at E3!

2012 Nintendo game release dates

And finally we get concrete dates on some of the other talked about games last year that couldn't make it before the end of this year, those that aren't named Zelda or Mario Kart or 3D Land. And some of them have really been sitting in TBA for a long, long time now *glares at Kid Icarus Uprising*

It's been in the 3DS hot seat since the console's revealing at E3 2010 but never made it to launch or anywhere near that. No idea why, but it's now slated for March 23 2012, according to Nintendo.

Remember this thing? I just posted about it right below this, and it's going to US as well, but not with Monster Hunter 3G in tow. Rather, it'll be released together with Resident Evil Revelations on February 7 2012. The catch? 3DS' very own frankenstick will only be sold in GameStop, much like the cautious limited US release for Xenoblade Chronicles. I don't understand why Nintendo are giving GameStop the exclusive treatment, it's just limiting sales.

The adorable Rhythm Heaven Wii which made a decent wave in Japan some months ago gets a new title, Rhythm Heaven Fever, and a box art bursting with color! It's coming on February 13, one week after RE Revelations.

No it's not a Mario bowling game, this is Mario Party 9, and it gets a 2012 release date on March 11. That's a goodd way to fill up the release schedule pre-E3 2012....maybe. I do dig some Mario Party though; been itching for something better than the mediocre MP8.

Okay so this may not be on every Wii gamer's wishlist but it's definitely something worth noting anyway since Pokepark 2, right from the first revealed screenshot, already looks ten times more polished than the first game and features at the very least more replayable minigames and battle games. Instead of Beyond the World, the US subtitle is Wonders Beyond, and it's coming on February 27, 2012.

Other release dates to look out for:

  • Tales of the Abyss for 3DS, February 14
  • Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for 3DS, also February 14
  • Tekken 3D Prime Edition for 3DS on February 2012
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D on Q1 2012
And some other things including downloadable eShop and VC games are coming out too. Good ones at that; a Jett Rocket sequel on 3DS, VVVVV and Kirby's Block Ball among other things.

We've yet to hear from the other 3DS big titles like Luigi's Mansion 2 and Paper Mario, but time will tell.

Super Mario game for 3DS

Or rather, just the logo projected onto a giant screen behind the ever-talkative Iwata. Looks clean and modern just the way it should be. Something's projecting out of the O at the end though....Tanooki Mario?

There are screenshots though. Looks like we'll be getting a brand-new 3D Mario. Rejoice!

Super Mario Bros. BG design sheets

Written by pikaby

I think I've seen the BG sheets for The Legend of Zelda before (the dungeon layouts were done on square grids and paper) but definitely not Mario. Found them off Kotaku today although how long they've been floating around the net before Kotaku picked up on them is unknown.

Fascinating Mario facts from Mario Creator

Written by pikaby

A portion of a news interview with Shigeru Miyamoto. Source: GoNintendo

So, Mario. How does he manage to stay fresh and relevant even though he's already 25 years old?
---
Q: What is it about Mario that resonates so well with players?
SM: When we create games, the gamer really is the main character. In that regard it may not really matter who the main character is onscreen. But you know, Mario is someone who has become very familiar and I think it is that people are comfortable with becoming Mario. … Mario really has grown and changed and evolved with the evolution of digital technology. The new technology is fresh and exciting and the next thing you know it becomes familiar and Mario follows that. He's a familiar character, but he is also fresh because he is always doing new things based on what the technology allows him to do.
---
He's the digital Mickey Mouse- he can do almost anything and still manage to somehow fit in seamlessly. You know, even though a lot of gamers in my country are damn brainless (and have never played a Mario game before in their lives), anyone and EVERYONE still knows the name Mario, the game character, the one who jumps on top of turtles, when I mention it to them. That's how influential he is, I guess. Now I'd wish more people here actually play his 'fresh and exciting' new games. I want someone to discuss Mario Galaxy 2 with.

The interviewer also asked Miyamoto abou this favorite Mario game. You'd think someone would have already asked that question a long time ago.
---
Q: What is your most favorite Mario game and why?
SM: Super Mario World (1993) is something that included of course all the action you saw in Super Mario Bros. but it also had the map features, so it also had that element of players having to think about where they were going and what they were going to do next. I also think that it is a game that developed a large number of staff people who became producers and directors.
---
High five, Shigsy! You and I have some great things in common. Super Mario World wasn't the first game with map features though, so I don't know what he was going about there.

New Mario games for Wii and 3DS? The latter's pretty inevitable, but I wonder about Mario's fate on Wii after Sports Mix comes out.
---
Q: So I assume we have not seen the last of Mario. Can you say anything about his future adventures on the Wii or Nintendo 3DS?
SM: Of course, we are working on a Mario product for the Nintendo 3DS, I can tell you that. One of the things we have looked at, you know when you are in a 3D world but on a 2D screen it is difficult sometimes to tell distance, whether an object you are looking at is in the foreground, in the background, is the object above you? Sometimes it's a little bit harder. So it's going to be really exciting for us to make that easier for the player to understand using the Nintendo 3DS technology. And for the first time ever Mario will be on a handheld system with an analog stick for controls. That's new.
---
3DS is going to be exciting. A couple of weeks ago he did mention both 2D and 3D Mario being in the works though. The Wii is slowly turning cold. Not for me, I still have to clear that games backlog before the next Nintendo console comes.

Then there was a question on why Mario was Italian. Just a random thought. And of course, they're beavering away on the new Zelda (Skyward Sword and the OoT remake. They've got a lot to cover) and aren't stopping. *waits*

Miyamoto making both 2D and 3D Mario for 3DS

Written by pikaby

- 3D polygonal visuals give players a greater sense of being part of the action
- they also allow for more freedom and choice
- some people are turned off by 3D polygonal visuals because they feel they're too complex
- "When Super Mario became Mario 64, the range of players narrowed greatly."
- Miyamoto feels the dev team made great strides in making a 3D polygonal game for everyone with Super Mario Galaxy, but this still wasn't enough for some players
- that's why Nintendo created New Super Mario Bros.
- "When asked 'what will we do on 3DS,' the answer is, of course, we'll make both (2D and 3D). They both have their own appeal."
- the 3D effect on 3DS can help make it easier to determine depth, which would greatly help those players with issues feeling out that mechanic while playing
- this could be of benefit to Zelda as well
- "gives a great feeling of existence to Mario, Link and others."
- this also goes hand-in-hand with character weight, which also is very important to making the characters feel real
- in 2D Mario..."It's difficult to tell when they will hit the player, so we were only able to use these (depth visual tricks) lightly. However, we'll be able to use this type of thing quite a bit on the 3DS."
- Iwata: "You went more in-depth than I'd been expected. This is the first I've heard of this."
- Miyamoto: "No good? Don't tell any game magazine people."

Source: GoNintendo, which in turn came from andriasang.com

Making both a 2D and a 3D Mario game for 3DS? Miyamoto's trying hard to please both sides of the coin this time.

Sometimes I don't know if 2D is the way to go when it comes to increasingly advanced consoles. I mean, even though New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold a lot more (pleasing many retro Mario fans), the fact is Mario Galaxy and its sequel were far superior games, and sold quite a lot as well. Not to mention Galaxy 2 had a fair chunk of 2D sections in its stages, in addition to being mainly 3D. The trick here is striking a balance between the two dimensions. 2D makes for simplicity and ease of control, and anyone can pick up, play and enjoy. But at the same time, 3D gives an extra dimension in freedom of level design. You can make more things happen with three dimensions than you can with two. NSMBWii's mistake with fans wasn't because it was 2D, but because most of the level elements were old and played out. It felt bland and boring to half the people playing it. That same half would be the ones to herald Mario Galaxy 2 as the new coming.

Miyamoto was right in saying 2D and 3D both have their own appeal, but 2D has to be done right and brought up-to-date, or risk being stuck with one foot in the past like NSMBWii. He talked about depth perception in 2D Mario for 3DS...will we be seeing Bullet Bills flying out from the background of the screen into our eyes? Sounds like an exciting prospect. Time to reinvent the wheel.

...he also mentioned Zelda didn't he? 2D Zelda? Remember how the last one turned out? Oh well, there's no stopping him anyway, and what he makes is usually right on the money.

Super Mario Bros. turns 25

Written by pikaby

25 already? Even I haven't lived that long to recognize the significance of the first Mario...but at least I was close. I grew up playing Super Mario World without knowing what a historic character he was, till the days of the Gamecube. Mario has been a part of me as it is for every other gamer, and it'll continue to be. So, the least I can do is say congrats to him, and I'll be seeing Mario for another 25 years to come, I hope.

But enough about me. Nintendo are throwing their own anniversary party, releasing this sweet-looking bundle in a red box, containig Super Mario All Stars, a soundtrack CD and a DVD with Mario's history in it. A website has also been opened to commemorate Mario's 25th birthday, and contests and lucky draws are organized with tons of Mario-related prizes to be won, including those sweet Mario hanafuda playing cards we saw a few months back They're different, with a large 25th anniversary emblem emblazoned on the back of each card. Tote bags, T-shirts, and so much more. To participate in the draw, Japanese people (yes, not you and me) have to buy a Wii or DS Mario game. Jealousy sets in.

You can view the awesome site for yourself here. Wish Mario a happy birthday while you're at it!

Koopa's Hell

Written by pikaby

Does CollegeHumor allow embedding?...Yeaaah.....no. Oh well, I guess it won't hurt to give a link to the video. Ever wondered what happened to the Koopa shell you jumped on and it bounces back and forth between two pipes/obstacles forever? No one ever thought about what the poor turtle was thinking of before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4-6BJkz2rI

Actually, in a real Mario game, all you do is advance a little bit more into the stage and if you back-track, the bouncing shell is no more. Either it disappears or the Koopa is back out again and walking like nothing happened. Not so much of a bouncing hell now.

But still...What goes on in the mind of the Koopa? WHAT GOES ON IN THE MIND OF THE KOOPA!!!!! IN HIS ENDLESS BOUNCING HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mario's being so sadistic, lol.

Super Mario Bros. League of Extraordinary Heroes- Chapter 2

I'm counting the prologue out of this, so number 3 is technically 2. Credits to fellow member Daisyfan for the fanfic!

Chapter 3: Castle in waste

Peach looked downward, her castle consumed with flames. She thought about all the lives that were likely lost. She looked over at Mario “Mario, what are we to do, my castle. . .” Peach started to tear up. Mario looked into Peach’s eyes “I have faith in our comrades, faith in Luigi, faith in Daisy. All cannot be lost.” As they finally landed on the ground Peach ran towards her castle, Mario tried to stop her but knew it was useless; she needed to see for herself. As she came closer she noticed something to the side of her. She turned around to see Toadsworth, Toadette, and dozens of other toads. “Peach, the castle was completely evacuated, but. . .”. “But what, what do you mean?” Peach replied. “The last time I saw Daisy and Luigi, they were in the castle milady. I’m not certain if they survived.” Toadsworth broke his stare at Peach.

Miyamoto keeps Mario from being too childish

Written by pikaby

"Unless you're careful, there's a tendency for games like Mario that can be played by children to gradually become childish. Those making the game tend to unconsciously make them that way. Taking how Mario's line can be scripted as an example, they even propose to write, 'Where'd my mommy go?' When someone in their fifties like me hears their player-character speak childishly like that, it doesn't quite sit right. After all, Mario wasn't a game only for children in the first place. As I make a game, I try to keep in mind that guys in their fifties will play it, too." - Shigeru Miyamoto

Mario, childish? I don't think so, though there is some sort of perception that all Nintendo games with colorful graphics and cute characters are for children. You can blame the 'mature' people online in Halo 3 and Modern Warfare 2(note: 'mature' people who play those games that are under the age of 15). Hey, Nintendo has always been family-friendly.

As for 'where'd my mommy go?' it'd sound deeply wrong for Mario to say it, but if it was a Luma, that's just perfectly understandable. It's not childish.

I have to admit, that's a really nice sweater. It's got World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. on it, front and back. If only it wasn't a nerd wearing it and posing to look somewhat 'cool'.

It's advertised as being nerdy, but you could at least make it cool....dontcha know Mario has left the Nerds Club?

Super Mario theme at the Olympics?

Written by pikaby

Source: http://kotaku.com/5516720/super-mario-and-japans-national-pride

When I read the article I laughed. Hard. A piece of game music played in the Olympics instead of the Japanese national anthem. That's what Nobuo Uematsu thought of at an anime convention. Whether or not he meant it is a different story, but for now I'd like to believe it's all just for fun.

Quoted: "I felt they should've run that during the Olympic medal ceremony instead of the Japanese national anthem"

Well, sure, Mario's theme song means a lot to Japan(and I do mean a lot, being responsible for nearly most of the gaming pop culture that blossomed later on), but this is the anthem we're talking about. If it were my country, I sure wouldn't replace 'Negaraku' (Malaysian national anthem) with...um....I dunno, some other game music that means a lot to me.

Okay, I'll stop rambling about being patriotic, this topic gets a bit touchy at times.
