Nintendo @ E3 2014 Impressions

I'm not one to immediately jump to conclusions as to which big company "wins" E3 every year, so that's probably why you're reading this three days after the Digital Event, but now I've had time to come to a consensus and from what I've seen this year, Nintendo really knocked it out of the park. While Microsoft and Sony were catering to the teenage angst of fan services, glorifying 60 fps and exclusive DLC like they were the raining holy mana bread of gaming, Nintendo took the Digital Event and Treehouse after party as a means to showcase what games are truly meant for: fun. Here are the main highlights from this week's Nintendo @ E3:

The Big N5 of the Week - Fear my sword of bread!

(To anyone in any universe reading our weekly blog, I've been accidentally posting the blog as "Big 5" instead of "Big N5". We will go with the latter from now on.)

5. Master Sword made out of bread.
Yup...

 4. Little Masters: The Masters of Monsters.
To see some more pics of this hilarious iOS Pokemon knock-off check out this link. It even has a trailer too!

3. Genesect available at launch via Mystery Gift!
Having a hard time tracking down those darn Event Pokemon? Well lucky for you, because Genesect, that cyborg prior-Japanese-only Pokemon, will be available via mystery gift on the day Pokemon Black 2/White 2 are released for nearly two months! Get your bodies ready, trainers!

2. New Nintendo Land attractions revealed. (image linked from GoNintendo)
New attractions for the upcoming Wii U launch title Nintendo Land have been revealed as a shooting game inspired by Metroid, where the the player controlling the control pad steers Samus' ship blasting at other players below. The second attraction revealed was a Balloon Fighter mini-game, but very many images have surfaced as of yet.

 1. Club Nintendo gave away limited Kirby medals as a reward this week.
For only 600 coins (and if you were one of the lucky ones to get) Club Nintendo members snagged this shiny Kirby pin. Unfortunately, it was limited to only 1,000 pins and is not not available any more (WHY CRUEL WORLD?!?!). Kirby's 20th Anniversary for Wii is still available though, so snag it up while you can!

Thanks for reading and try not to burn your Master Sword as you put it into the oven!

Big N5 of the Week - Mario! Monsters! Coins! Oh My!

Sir EggBeatr8 here to bring you another installment of the Big N5! The Olympics is the main going on, but let's see what's stirring up in the Nintendo universe!

5. Month of Mario! Virtual Console Mario games on sale for a limited time!
To celebrate the release of New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo is offering VC Mario titles for a bargain price for limited times only! The titles and dates are as followed:
July 26 - Aug. 1 - Super Mario Bros. - $3.99
Aug. 2 - Aug. 8 - Super Mario Land - $2.99
Aug. 9 - Aug. 15 - Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - $2.99
Aug. 16 - Aug. 22 - Mario's Picross - $2.99
Be sure to pick them up!

4. Rumor: Both Monster Hunters for 3DS may be coming to America.
After an iffy forecast of speculation, a new light has finally formed about whether Monster Hunter Tri 3G and Monster Hunter 4 will be coming to the US - but it's a rumor. Someone with supposed inside info on the Capcom titles has stated the claim, but only time will tell if either title will be launched overseas. And where is that Professor Layton and Ace Attorney American release people are waiting for in all of this? Be sure to check in.

3. Indie RPG "Two Brothers" possible for Wii U/3DS eShop?
"Two Brothers" is an indie action/adventure/role playing/nostalgia game being developed by AckkStudios, made into the style and texture of a Game Boy game. In an interview with the developer Brian Allanson this is what he had to say about the possibility of the games coming to the eShop: "I would never rule out the possibilities of porting the game to a Nintendo console, but I think I would rather create another game designed for those systems strengths." While it doesn't seem likely for this game to hit the eShop any time soon, another secret project entitled "Atlas" was confirmed for 2013. Brain did not say if it was a 3DS title, but he did hint at "3D" in the interview. You never know!

2. Ike confirmed as Fire Emblem: Awakneing DLC.
Do you like Ike? Of course you do! Well you Fire Emblem fans will be glad to know that Ike will be appearing in the next Fire Emlem as priced DLC! Your enemies will tremble in fear of the mighty swing of your bl- wait, why is he so skinny?

1. Kirby 20th anniversary listed as $39.99 on Gamestop.
Is this the official or the marked down price of Kirby's Anniversary Collection? If it's the latter, it would be a good time to snag this goodie!

Sorry to any readers that may be reading this, as I've been busy yesterday and could not for the life of me finish this on time, but the blog will continue as scheduled on Sunday. Hopefully.

Have a great week everyone!

Big N5 of the Week - Guns, Wii U's, and Kirbys Everywhere!

Our new news feature, depicting the top 5 best Nintendo stories from around the web. Updated every Sunday. Is your body ready?

5. Rumor: Leaked Microsoft document revealed Wii U price tag?

An apparent leaked Microsoft document describing the next gen Xbox, also had some stuff to say about the Wii U. The document described that the Wii U will cost $250, and being first in new console train line could "defend [Nintendo's] success in broad gaming segments" and "further erode console differentiation" by matching console hardware specs with PS3 and Xbox360. It was hard to say if the document was fake or legit, even though a $250 price tag is traditional for a Nintendo home console, but with the system being released with a gamepad controller, a $300 price tag would seem the most plausible. Unfortunately, the leaked document was soon taken down, so I can't offer any links.

4. Jimmy Fallon thought Wii U was just a new Wii.

Yeah...you can watch it here. Thanks for adding more confusion to the already confused casual market that thinks this is just a new Wii accessory, Jimmy. The system needs all the help it can get.
3. Keldeo Resolution form Revealed.

Teased on Tuesday in a magazine scan, Keldeo's new form was finally revealed this week showing off a more gutsy form of the newest Event Pokemon. According to Serebii Keldeo can only change form in B/W2 in Sangi Town while Terrakion, Virizion, and Coballon are in your party, and when Keldeo knows the move Secret Sword. Like the new form? Hate it? Tell us what you think!
2. Kirby 20th Anniversary Game Line-up revealed.

Good news for Kirby fans: Kirby's 20th anniversary will not be in vain. The pink puffball's next foray will be a collection of his finest games for the Wii: Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy) Kirby's Adventure (NES) Kirby's Dream Land 2 (Game Boy) Kirby Super Star (SNES) Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES) Kirby 64 (Nintendo 64), and will feature an on-disc history calender, a compilation CD, and some games will even include bonus content and new levels. It's every fan's dream collection of Kirby games all rolled into one! Happy birthday, Kirby; may your games live on for many, many more anniversaries!
1. Miyamoto wants to make a FPS for the Wii U?

Source: Kotaku. You heard right. The man behind Mario and Zelda wants to someday make a FPS akin to Doom and Call of Duty for the Wii U. "I actually do kind of want to make a first-person shooter," he says, "but I don't have time." And also went on to specifics as how he'd make a FPS: "Rather than necessarily the question of 'What kind of weapon do I have?' in a first person shooter or 'What kind of effect does that have on an enemy?', I think that the structure of a first-person shooter is something that's very interesting," he said through a translator. "Having that 3D space that in theory you are in and being able to look around and explore that—particularly being able to do that in conjunction with another person—is very interesting." If anything it will not be your typical affair of a FPS, as shown how Miyamoto put his own spin on the RTS genre with Pikmin. Whenever he does decide to make a FPS, or whatever he does with the genre you can be rest assured that it will be like nothing we've played before.

Tune back next Sunday for other Big N5 of the week!

What Kirby's Return to Drealand could have been

These two were from an untranslated Iwata Asks interview on Kirby's Return to Dreamland and its protracted 7 year development cycle. Post-Gamecube era, it seems two diffeent visual styles were considered for the Wii version but were dropped for normal 3D graphics on a 2D plane.

....when it could have been a whole lot more stylish. I don't care much for the second style, which is isometric but would look quite bland in actual play if not done right.

But the first one.....GOD. It's a Kirby version of the amazingly good cel-shaded style of Wario Land Shake It. Everything looks so adorable in that style....I'd really kill someone just to get my version of the game with those semi-anime graphics with fluid animation. Dang.

Kirby TV Channel

With all the fuss surrounding the Netflix services and TV channels coming to 3DS (in Japan, at least), it was really a nice surprise when this new channel was released for Europe. The Kirby TV Channel is exactly what it is, a channel for streaming episodes of the Kirby anime, dubbed in English. Episodes will be available only on certain days, so if you're a fan of the show, you might not wanna miss them.

No word on a US release yet. The Kirby anime was pretty good however, and should be brought over to other regions to enjoy!

How Kirby got his name

From GoNintendo, in an interview between GameInformer and Miyamoto:

Yes, it is a fact that I met John Kirby and got to know him when he was defending us during the lawsuit against Universal. And it is a fact that the Kirby name was partially chosen in connection to him, but it wasn’t named after him. Instead, we had a list of names that we were looking at and Kirby was one of the names on the list. As we were going through the list and narrowing down the selections we saw that Kirby was there and we thought John Kirby’s name is Kirby, and started thinking that if those two had a connection that would be kind of funny.
The other element to the naming is that the character is very cute. Kirby is this soft and fluffy character and he’s very cute. In Japan, for cute characters they use very soft names with soft sounds in them. I thought the name Kirby had these harsh sounds to it, and I thought the
juxtaposition of this cute character with this harsh-sounding name was very funny.

Harsh sounding name? Maybe I must be pronouncing it wrong.

Atsumete! Kirby boxart and release date

Cutest boxart ever? Cutest boxart ever. Let's hope the US box won't turn all ten Kirbys into angry faces *shudders*

Release date is August 4 2011 in Japan, apparently delayed from a first release date of July 7. Oh well, just one extra month won't kill. Still no extra footage of the game since the first bit we saw back in December last year.

Atsumete! Kirby Famitsu scan!

Click to view full scan. Source: Kirby's Rainbow Resort

It's Kirby and the Amazing Mirror all over again. Kirby split up into many different bodies by an evil villain- we've all heard this one before. This time instead of four, we now have ten of the little pink critters to manage! The game takes place on the bottom screen with the top one showing just your scores and menus and stuff. And you don't just control one Kirby while the remaining 9 are handled by uber-dumb AI- you can take control of all ten at the same time and handle problems, enemies and puzzles in a group, using the touch screen!

No Copy Abilities though- looks like Kirby's plunging into another new territory of gameplay. Release date? Not announced at the moment, but the scan says Atsumete! Kirby should be out within this year.

New DS KIrby gets Japanese name

...but no solid release date yet. It's called 'Atsumete! Kirby' or literally, 'Gather! Kirby', referencing this game's gimmick of having a large bunch of Kirbys to work with at a single time. Kirby looks slightly different from the exact same sprite style that was used through GBA, Squeak Squad and Super Star Ultra. Wonder how you use the Kirby army...and whether or not you still have Copy Abilities because so far I'm seeing none of them here.

New Wii Kirby game leaked

Written by pikaby

Guldarnit, and barely a month after Nintendo 5-Star's resident Kirby freak finished playing Epic Yarn! If that was a little too alien for your tastes, this will bring back infinite joy to old-school Kirby fans! Just look at that footage...It may not be the pseudo-3D adventure we saw on Gamecube, but it works.

Now for it to actually be released and not be canceled- because this rumored Kirby is in the exact same spot as Kirby 64 and Kirby GCN...right at the end of the console's lifespan.

My life is worth living once more.

Kirby Keychains and Sweets

Written by pikaby

The Kirby fan in me is having seizures of cute. Really, I really want a few of these keychains! Released in October and available for sale in Japan.

Four types of Kirby poses, a Waddle Dee and a knitted yarn Kirby. I FREAKING LOVE ALL OF THEM

Then there's the gummy sweets which will be out by next month. Based of Kirby's Epic Yarn and each of the gummies based off a character in the game. These are also damn great *want*

Good old DS gets more Kirby, Pokemon love

Written by pikaby

Along come the two bright, cheery and cute faces of Nintendo to light up the DS in 2011 when everyone else has graduated to its successor. One final hurrah for the dual-screened console!

Kirby will be starring in his 4th DS outing, which is a platformer as usual. Outside of the video montage and a few shots, nothing much is known about this except there are like, a billion Kirbys on-screen at any one time. What the heck's happened in Dream Land this time? Also, more cuteness overload. You simply can't get enough of his round, pink, charming face.

As for Pokemon, it's getting a game similar to Typing of the Dead- you type out words to capture Pokemon. And, it comes packed in with a DS-compatible wireless keyboard! Are they serious about getting kids to learn how to type? I hope it won't be that shallow because people like me want to play it too! Or, maybe not. Maybe I'll get the game without the keyboard just for the heck of it. It's rare to find a 3D handheld Pokemon game. Being the Pokemon freak I am, even novelty games interest me.

The touch screen can also be used as a makeshift keyboard, but how that will work out is beyond me, as the screen can only take one input at a time, and finger presses don't register well. Who knows?

Both are slated for 2011.

About us

Here's a brief rundown on how we started out and how we came to be here with our intrepid little blog and forum.

Nintendo 5-Star first started out as a Kirby fansite, called Kirby 5-Star. You know, it's Kirby, and he's always associated with stars and the like, and that's how I got its name together. It was in August 2006 that I set up Kirby 5-Star as a GameSpot.com 'union'. Unions are GameSpot's version of user groups or clubs, except with a whole section dedicated for articles and a forum to boot, all for free.

About 3 and a half years into running Kirby 5-Star, our moderator, toadster101, was banned from the site. If you want to know more about the ban you can ask him. I'm not responsible for it *wink*. Anyway, because of this we had to move out of Gamespot to keep in touch with him. At the same time Kirby 5-Star wasn't doing so well and we decided to expand our operations outside Gamespot.

Destiny Guy set us into a Sparklit hosted forum, which we also named Kirby 5-Star. Therefore the legacy of us as a Kirby fan site continued here. But development of Kirby games grinded to a halt after the release of Kirby Super Star Ultra for the DS, with the long-rumored Kirby Wii nowhere near release, and Kirby fan sites all over the internet were running dry. We were also hard hit and activity was near zero. Think of it like The Great Depression of gaming. Nothing new, nothing to discuss, everyone dead.

So we moved again, on September 2009, to our current forum on InvisionFree, and widened our focus to all things Nintendo and not just the pink puffball. And our current name, Nintendo 5-Star was born.

To head over to our forums, click here! We're looking for members and we hope you can join in as one of us!
