Nintendo E3 3DS- The big reveal!

And the bombshell of this year's E3 has hit, and what an explosion's it made.

That up there is Nintendo's official next handheld to succeed the DS, called the Nintendo 3DS (yep, no 'final' name for it, just plain old 3DS). At first mention of it a few months back you'd be forgiven for thinking it to be nothing more than a DS with simple 3D effects shoehorned in and nothing more, but now that the machine's been shown proper this E3, all previous prejudices and expectations vanished. The bar was raised considerably.


Since this 3D thing is an illusion, you can't see the 3D unless you're actually playing it, but those who have tried it out at the show floor (I. Am. Jealous) have come back with almost universal positive response. There's supposedly a 'sweet spot' or a certain distance you have to be from the screen in order for the 3D to have full effect, but it seems to be a minor niggle. Try looking at this video. Can you see the 3D? You can't right? I can't even begin to imagine what it would look like.....even after revealing the 3DS, this is one enigma that can't be solved until the general public get to hold it in their cold, clammy hands.

And hold it they will along with a bunch of the finest launch lineup Nintendo has done so far. I already have one member of the forum who mistook Kid Icarus Uprising for a Wii game (no seriously), which speaks volumes of how much more advanced the graphics have come since the DS, probably even close to PS3 standards! (which confirms another rumor I posted a while ago) Add to that a new Paper Mario game, a new Pilotwings game, a new Mario Kart, Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64 remakes in 3D, Nintendogs + Cats (oh come on, we just KNEW this was coming, right Miyamoto?), and over 20 pledges from 3rd party developers which include the Shin Megami Tensei series, Resident Evil, Super Street Fighter IV, and 3DS looks set to storm the next generation of handheld consoles full force. Ball's back in your court, iPad.

There's loads more where that came from, Nintendo's E3 site has full details, and there's probably even more on the way for Day 2 and 3.

And the features? Analogue stick? Check. A long-awaited addition that finally materialized. Dual cameras? Check. It's compatible with the Nintendo DSi after all, but the difference now is the camera on the front, or rather, cameras. Two of them side-by-side to take 3D photos. Damn amazing! Wish the resolution was higher than the DSi's 0.3 megapixel though. (it's still 0.3 on account of the backwards compatibility) The top screen is now a widescreen and capable of full HD graphics(which confirms what we've seen from the test board). Nintendo, you are awesome! 3DS is also capable of watching Hollywood movies in 3D. The full list isn't out yet, but Dreamworks' 'How to Train your Dragon' is on there. Good stuff for the rest of us, then.

An overwhelming new console by an overwhelming new Nintendo, who is returning to the innovative gaming company real gamers know and love, and hopefully all the casual gamers they've earned over the past four or so years come in tow too. After all, that's what they did to expand their fanbase.
