My top 5 levels in Kirby's Epic Yarn

Forget for a moment that I'm talking about a 6-month-old Kirby game which although hugely popular, has already been completed by everyone who owns it. It's just me- the slowest and most anti-completionist gamer ever. Despite having the game for five months (and loving every minute of it) I've never looked into every hidden post-boss stage so I could at least have something new to look forward to every time I boot up the game. I cleared the last stage just a few days ago so I can finally put together a list of my favorites, like I did before with Mario Galaxy 2.

Obligatory spoiler warning if you haven't completed the game, though I really doubt anyone reading this would be playing the game slower than I do.

'It feels like....trousers'

How proper. I'm surprised Kirby's Epic Yarn even kept the title completely unbutchered on its way to Europe.

Get ball of yarn with Kirby's Epic Yarn preorder

Now here's something your cat would really appreciate.

But what's IN the yarn is what its human master would appreciate! Wonder if it's Kirby plush toys? It wouldn't make sense if it wasn't. Only in Australia.

...And what if there's nothing in the ball of yarn? Well, like I said, it makes a good cat distraction for a couple hours, or if you somehow enjoy knitting as much as you enjoy gaming (ooh).

Nostalgia in Kirby's Epic Yarn

Written by pikaby

You know, I had the impression that everyone would have played through the entire game without me so I didn't bother to write about this. But just a moment ago I read the Iwata Asks article on Epic Yarn (again, I'm late to the party), and I saw the discussions going on about the music. Hirokazu Ando was there to talk about his classic Dream Land compositions.

---

Iwata: So in the end, how did you integrate the songs made by HAL Laboratory and the songs made by Tomita-san?
Ando: The structure of the story was important, so Tomita-san’s music plays during the first half and towards the middle.
Ikegami: In other words, we used the new sound in the first half and middle to highlight the difference between this new world of yarn and the usual Kirby world.
Ando: And HAL Laboratory was in charge of the songs that play in the latter stages. As you proceed through the game, an arrangement of the Kirby theme that everyone is familiar with plays, so you feel like, “Ah, I’ve come home.” I think it’s a very effective structure for the game.
Iwata: The structure of the levels and the music that plays during them are directly connected.

---

This is amazing. It's like Ando-san read my mind, and probably the minds of all Kirby fans everywhere. After all the new music, suddenly coming back to this really does feel like a happy reunion with all the familiar things you knew about Kirby. It's spoiler territory to say which stage this remixed Green Greens theme plays in, but I will say- it's more than just the music that will be familiar to you when you get there. Pretend you're Kirby, and take 'I've come home' very literally. Know which stage I'm talking about now?

Kirby Keychains and Sweets

Written by pikaby

The Kirby fan in me is having seizures of cute. Really, I really want a few of these keychains! Released in October and available for sale in Japan.

Four types of Kirby poses, a Waddle Dee and a knitted yarn Kirby. I FREAKING LOVE ALL OF THEM

Then there's the gummy sweets which will be out by next month. Based of Kirby's Epic Yarn and each of the gummies based off a character in the game. These are also damn great *want*

Kirby's Epic Yarn: Hands-on

Written by pikaby

I hung from a dandelion made of cotton wool. I unzipped an entire building facade revealing a hidden passage. I tied a knot around an erupting felt volcano. I swam through thread rings as a dolphin. I collected beads as a tiny music note. I tore the patch off a crescent moon, revealing a sun. All that in the first 3 hours.

I got Kirby's Epic Yarn!

Written by pikaby

With my reduced access to my Wii I don't get to play most of this holiday season's rich offerings...but at least I got to spend 2 days with the cutest Kirby game ever made. In one sitting I've breezed through the first two worlds, and going back to play some more! I'll post a report on my hands-on soon (more than a month later than everyone else, but what can I do), but for now, I can confidently say that you won't be disappointed. Unless you have an aversion to cute or easy games or not dying.

By the way I just figured this out my myself though. 'Yarn' can mean 'story' in addition to the woolly fabric, so Epic Yarn can mean 'epic story'. 'Epic story' is overstated (Kirby's stories have never been that deep/complex!) but it makes more sense now that you think about it, right?

Kirby's Epic Yarn for serious gamers too

"As a team, we were extremely opposed to the idea of an action game where the game wasn't over when an enemy got you. We debated that for quite a long time. ...we thought it would be fine if we just made a fun game the way we're good at." - producer Etsunobu Ebisu

"When serious gamers play, they want to clear a level without any mistakes like running into enemies, so this game is made so you really feel regret when you run into enemies and a strong sense of achievement when you clear a level without any mistakes." - producer Nobuo Matsumiya

Which is kinda weird because the general consensus for Epic Yarn is that it's too god damn easy. You can't even die.

But serious gamers who appreciate creativity and fun in games should still check it out. Me, I just want it because it's too cute not to.

Kirby's Epic Yarn screenshots

Written by pikaby

And loads of them. I'll link to the source so you can see everything. Here, I'm posting a few choice shots which I think were the best.

(yippee music note transformation! So cute!)
Kirby gets his own pad this time.
Submarine Kirby is still the cutest morph ever seen in his long history. Wait till you see him move.
Christmas stage! Too bad most people will have already beaten the game before Christmas.

Original source for more amazingly adorable shots of Epic Yarn!

Kirby's Epic Yarn ad

Written by pikaby

Kirby's Epic Yarn, the biggest Kirby game in literally years, is heading into its release week (October 17 is just a few days away! Pre-ordered yet?)

And a flood of videos and Nintendo's official US  ad for the game is now out. The ad is one of the most adorable Wii game ads ever, with none of that 'people waving waggle-motes around' nonsense that was so rife when the Wii launched. It's Kirby in tank mode!

I'll look for gameplay videos posthaste. See ya soon~!

Kirby's Epic Yarn Faitsu score

Written by pikaby

Famitsu's review score for Keito no Kaabii, or what we call Kirby's Epic Yarn, was...9/8/9/10, which brings it to a total of 36/40. Earning a 10 from one reviewer is no mean feat for the pink puff, and getting such a high total score even harder.

Well that knits up Kirby's good game drought, for now. Epic Yarn is already released in Japan, and we can expect more positive reviews and melted hearts when it comes out in English later this month.

3rd US Kirby's Epic Yarn trailer!

Written by pikaby

For some reason US trailers of games usually feature a lot less talking than their Japanese counterparts, preferring to let the gameplay do the talking. No story details are revealed in English as such, but lots of new footage, again, from this video. A hub world so cleverly unlocked in only a way which a world of cloth can, a teddy bear that needs stitching up (best touch ever!), Kirby's heart-melting fire engine and submarine transformations....You'd have to have a heart of stone not to love Epic Yarn.

Meta Knight in Kirby's Epic Yarn

Written by pikaby

Found from GoNintendo, reportedly leaked from the latest Famitsu. Pokemon news tend to leak fast, but anything else can be heavily speculated. Looks authentic though, so I'd put my chips on 'yes, Meta Knight's in the game'

Which can only be a good thing. What would a Kirby game be, no matter how radical the concept, without it's mainstay characters?

Kirby's Epic Yarn Nintendo Power Scan

Written by pikaby

Can't believe I missed this. The text is large enough to read when the scan is zoomed in to full-size, so I won't go into detail on what it's about. It explains a lot of things, including why Kirby can't eat up enemies in this game. Fascinating!

PAX 2010- Kirby's Epic Yarn trailer and boxart

Written by pikaby

I don't think I've ever seen a Kirby game get this much coverage in my life. Epic Yarn is the darling on E3 and looks set to impress again at PAX, where there'll be more playable demos (probably the same ones with the extra HUD stuff tacked on). The amazing thing is even after the first E3 trailer and the recent Japanese Minna no NC trailer, this shows a lot of all-new gameplay, and older scenes expanded on to show new stuff, like the fight with the fiery bird.

The box? NoA aren't breaking the trend set by Super Star Ultra- happy Kirby is here to stay, just the way he should be. He's just too cute to look angry~

Whatever the case, this is something big for Kirby. More so than Metroid Other M, I want this. Now.

Kirby's Epic Yarn Japanese Trailer

Written by pikaby

And hopefully the start of even more amazing things to come. Epic Yarn looks as adorable as ever, and a bit of the story is shown here. Kirby wants to eat the strange yarn Maxim Tomato (typical greedy sackbag), and suddenly a monster appears out of it and sucks Kirby int a world of yarn and cloth materials. It's like Canvas Curse, only on a console version. Even King Dedede's here, though the circumstances of his appearance is still not known.

Cute trailer. I want more!

Kirby's Epic Yarn, or 'Keito no Kaabii' as it will be known in Japan, will be out on October 14 (JP) and October 17 (US)

Second big game conference in a row: PAX

Nintendo are on a roll. After having playable demos of their tantalizing fall lineup, they're doing it again at Penny Arcade Expo this year, with the same games. Hopefully, unlike Gamescom, there will be game trailers. I want a new Kirby's Epic Yarn trailer to drool over, dammit! And also, footage of Bit.trip Fate, which nothing is known about yet.

The PR email reads:
The upcoming Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle will give consumers their first-ever chance to play upcoming Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ games. Visitors to Nintendo’s booth (#352) will be able to get their hands on games such as Donkey Kong Country™ Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn™, GoldenEye 007 from Activision Publishing, Inc. and NBA JAM from EA SPORTS™. Fluidity, a new game for Nintendo’s WiiWare™ downloadable game service, will also make its debut at PAX.
Nintendo’s Fluidity combines an amazing physics engine that realistically models flowing water with innovative puzzle game play. Using the three forms of water – liquid, ice and cloud – players will solve challenging puzzles across multiple chapters of an illustrated magical book called Aquaticus. The game offers detailed tutorials that introduce basic game mechanics, but the complexity quickly ramps up as special powers are acquired and enemies are introduced, testing players’ reflexes and ingenuity.
PAX attendees will also be able to get their hands on Metroid™: Other M to see the seamless new perspective-switching first-person/third-person approach to this classic franchise. Visitors to the booth can also view one-of-a-kind costumes and props from the new Metroid: Other M television commercial in a special display area. Combining exploration, combat and a storyline that delves into the personal history of bounty hunter Samus Aran, Metroid: Other M launches on Aug. 31.
With so many video game fans converging in one place, PAX is the ideal place for players who already own DRAGON QUEST® IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies™ to gather to trade treasure maps or go questing together. Nintendo will provide DRAGON QUEST IX owners at the show with a special downloadable “Orgodemir” map via the game’s cooperative “Tag Mode” feature. Anyone who hasn’t yet purchased the game for the Nintendo DS family of systems can try it out at the Nintendo booth, and those looking to meet up with other players can do so at a special game-themed lounge in the North Lobby on level four of the PAX venue.
To receive treasure maps, players must have their Nintendo DS system running the DRAGON QUEST IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies game, set to Tag Mode. Once players reach the town of Stornway, they are able to access Tag Mode by talking to Erinn at the inn called “Quester’s Rest.”

Kirby's Epic Yarn dated!

Written by pikaby

And a whole lot more where that came from. Release dates for most of the games shown at E3 by Nintendo are announced!

• Metroid: Other M (Aug. 31)
• Samurai Warriors 3 (Sept. 27)
• Wii Party (Oct. 3)
• Kirby's Epic Yarn (Oct. 17)
• PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure (Nov. 1)
• FlingSmash (Nov. 7)
• Donkey Kong Country Returns (Nov. 21)

There's also mention of a new Bit.trip game, Bit.trip Fate, coming on the end of this year. Nothing else is known about it yet.

As for everyone's favorite handheld, here's the list of release dates.

• Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (Sept. 12)
• Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs (Oct. 4)
• Art Academy (Oct. 25)
• Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! (Nov. 14)

Super Scribblenauts is due October. Everyone set your calendars and prepare your wallets for another bashing- it's going to be an expensive holiday season. I already own both Pokemon games on this list in Japanese, but meh, I'll get them in English just for the heck of it. And heckle at a certain someone who thinks he can beat Guardian Signs' multiplayer mode by himself without facing any trouble.

October 17 for Epic Yarn, which was much sooner than I'd expected, and Flingsmash too, in early November. DKC Returns is released on my birthday. Lucky me :)

Zelda: Skyward Sword ranks high on the hype meter

Written by pikaby

This I got off GoNintendo.

2 million page views for the new Zelda game at IGN, firmly placing it in first.

But then...

As much as people wanted to see the new Zelda, more people walked away wanting to buy Kirby and Donkey Kong instead. Contradiction?

Kirby's Epic Yarn gameplay

Written by pikaby

Like Epic Mickey before it, this is one game which I've been wanting to get real gameplay footage of, and Gametrailers delivers. Here's them fighting off that stringy dragon boss in the official trailer.
